Inspiration or Obsession
As I sit down to write my first blog post, I realize how much of the day has magically evaporated. My time has been spent in front of the computer, setting things up, brainstorming, diving deep into ideas, and going down ‘rabbit holes’. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all, but I can’t help but wonder: Is this inspiration or obsession?
I think we've all been there. Some people dive into their passion or focus, chasing that inspired feeling, while others might get lost in the obsession of making everything perfect. Checking off a list. Getting a round of applause from the brain and onlookers. And then there are those who just shut it all out. Purposely shoving passion to the back burner and ignoring it.
So, what’s the difference? Passion and obsession can feel pretty similar at times, but when you start losing sight of everything else in your life, like self-care, health, relationships, or just being present, it might be a sign that you're not just feeling inspired, you're getting sucked into an obsession.
Here’s the thing: the key is to ask yourself, "Who am I doing this for?" If the answer is not for your own growth and well-being or not for the good of all including yourself, then it might be time to take a step back. Are you doing it for validation, external approval, or just to check things off a list? Or are you honoring your passion and creative flow?
And, when you start feeling that push to rush through everything, ask yourself: "What would the future me say about how I’m spending my time? Is there really a rush?" Time moves fast, but it doesn’t mean we need to sprint through life. It’s okay to slow down, take a break, and recognize the beauty we are hurriedly zipping past.
As much as I love what I do, I also need to remember that balance is crucial. I have a ‘full steam ahead’ personality that powers through without slowing down. I only stopped today when the need to pee overruled my passion. I nearly wet my britches by the time I gave in and stopped. As I finished my forced bathroom break and recognized my energy, I decided to take a healthy moment, against my will. I step outside to take a real break. I notice a cardinal near me. He comes so close. He almost has no fear and a quiet attitude of, ‘Hey, who is this human in my yard?” I’m fascinated by his hop from one spot to another, even though he has wings… much like me. He makes me smile. I breathe. My brain slows down, and clarity comes in. My energy settles.
Passion is what ignites us, but obsession can burn us out. Taking moments to step back, hydrate, go for a walk, and disconnect is just as important as diving into the work. Even if you have to set an alarm and schedule it.
So, if you're feeling a little too caught up in the hustle, maybe it’s time to check in with yourself. Are you really honoring your passion? Or are you pushing so hard that you’ve forgotten why you started in the first place, and you're missing the red bird moments right in front of you?
